Refrigerant recharge in a residential AC system is not a routine service — it is a repair. A properly-installed and properly-sealed refrigeration circuit is a closed loop that does not consume refrigerant. If the system is low on charge, refrigerant has leaked out somewhere — and the correct response is to locate the leak, seal or repair the leak, evacuate the system to remove moisture and non-condensables, and then recharge to manufacturer nameplate. Recharging without leak repair is a Band-Aid that fails within weeks to months, wastes refrigerant, and violates EPA Section 608 professional practice standards. Rivic performs recharge only after documented leak detection and repair — not as a stand-alone service.
Every Rivic technician holds independent EPA Section 608 Universal certification. All refrigerant work is performed under 40 CFR Part 82 protocols — recovery to certified recovery equipment, weighed reclamation, no venting to atmosphere ever. Documentation retained in customer file for 5 years per federal record-keeping requirements.
Federal AIM Act refrigerant transition mandated a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blend refrigerant for new residential systems manufactured after January 1, 2025. Carrier, Trane, Bryant, Rheem, Lennox, Goodman, and American Standard selected R-454B. A2L classification — mildly flammable, lower flammability limit than propane by an order of magnitude. Global warming potential (GWP) 466, roughly 78% lower than R-410A. Handling requires updated leak detection equipment, brazing procedures with nitrogen purge, and pressure-test protocols per manufacturer specifications. Every Rivic technician completed A2L handling training in 2024 through manufacturer certification cycles.
Japanese-market OEM selection for ductless mini-splits and heat pump systems from Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu General, and Daikin Industries. Single-component HFC refrigerant (not a blend). A2L classification. GWP 675, roughly 68% lower than R-410A. Handled with same A2L protocols as R-454B.
Standard residential refrigerant from roughly 2000 through 2024. HFC blend refrigerant. A1 classification (non-flammable). Not phased out from service — manufacturing of new R-410A residential systems stopped January 1, 2025, but aftermarket refrigerant remains available into the 2030s for service, repair, and recharge of existing systems. Most Merrimack Valley AC systems in service today use R-410A, and Rivic services them normally.
Pre-2010 residential AC used R-22 hydrochlorofluorocarbon refrigerant. Ozone-depleting substance. Production and import in the United States ended January 1, 2020. Aftermarket refrigerant remains legally available but at premium pricing ($90 to $180 per pound at current wholesale). Rivic services R-22 systems under EPA Section 608 recovery, reclamation, and recharge protocols — but the economics almost always favor system replacement to R-454B rather than R-22 recharge on aging equipment. Every leak on an R-22 system is functionally a replacement decision.
