Simplest and highest-value tier. Existing filter housing modified or replaced to accept 4-inch to 5-inch pleated media filters at MERV-13 or MERV-16 rating (vs. the typical 1-inch MERV-8 or lower filter shipped with most residential systems). Pleated media at 4-inch to 5-inch depth provides massive surface area, low pressure drop despite high MERV rating, and 6 to 12-month replacement interval. Advantages: captures 90%+ of particulate at MERV-13, 95%+ at MERV-16, low ongoing cost, no electrical consumption, no ozone or byproducts, works with existing HVAC blower. Disadvantages: does not address odors, gases, VOCs, or particulate smaller than roughly 0.3 microns without HEPA. Typical cost: $180 to $580 installed depending on existing filter housing.
Electronic air cleaners use electrostatic precipitation: an electric charge ionizes airborne particulate, then charged particles are collected on oppositely-charged plates or grids. Advantages: very high capture efficiency across a wide particle-size range including sub-micron particles, low pressure drop, washable/reusable collector plates (annual cleaning rather than filter replacement). True HEPA-grade filtration (99.97% at 0.3 microns) using a bypass air path that routes a portion of the total system airflow through the HEPA element while the majority of airflow passes through standard media filtration. This bypass architecture is necessary because true HEPA filters produce too high a pressure drop to accept the full HVAC airflow directly. Advantages: highest particulate capture efficiency including virus-sized particles and fine wildfire smoke particulate, hospital-grade filtration category, some models include activated carbon layer for VOC and odor reduction. MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is the ASHRAE 52.2 standard rating for filter particulate capture efficiency across three particle-size ranges. Higher MERV means higher capture efficiency, but also higher pressure drop that can strain the HVAC blower if the filter housing is not sized appropriately.
Portable HEPA units (Coway Airmega, Blueair Blue Pure, Levoit Core, IQAir HealthPro) are appropriate supplements for specific problem rooms — bedrooms for allergy-sensitive residents, home offices for immunocompromised residents, nurseries for infants, or during wildfire smoke events for continuous filtration in occupied spaces. Trade-offs vs. whole-home: portable units cover a limited area (typical 200 to 400 sq ft per unit), require ongoing filter replacement, produce noise, and only work when running.
