Applies to: gas furnaces, oil furnaces, gas boilers, oil boilers, gas water heaters, gas fireplaces, gas dryers (venting only), gas cooking appliances (limited residential application). The analyzer is inserted into the flue during steady-state combustion; readings taken after 10 to 15 minutes of warm-up: CO in ppm air-free (target under 100 ppm on residential natural gas equipment), CO2 percentage, O2 percentage, stack temperature, draft measurement, and combustion efficiency calculation. UL 2034-listed CO detectors have a 5 to 10-year design life — older units simply do not sense CO reliably even if the “power on” LED still lights. Rivic recommends complete replacement of every CO detector at least every 7 years regardless of apparent operating condition. Modern detectors include end-of-life warning (chirping or LED signal) but this warning is not universal and cannot be relied on as the only replacement trigger.
